Humble Treasures Turned 1!

Letter from Executive Director

It is with great joy I am able to announce and celebrate that Humble Treasures has made it to our 1st year of service and success. It’s incredible to think that this organization all started in my dining room from just an idea and willingness to help people, and today we have distributed 2,000 articles of clothing, served 402 individuals and partnered with 8 Community Organizations in the Metro-Atlanta area. We recognize that clothing is a very basic need, yet affordable clothing is a challenge for those that are under-resourced. Our goal is to provide appropriate interview attire, school clothes, and seasonal clothing; which are vital for success and personal dignity, and with your help we have been able to do just that.

I want to thank our donors, volunteers, community partners, and most importantly all the individuals we have served throughout the year. Because of you, Humble Treasures has grown into the awesome community resource that is has become today.

As we move into our 2nd year my hope is that we will serve more individuals via our Treasure Market and introduce new services that will only continue to add to the needs of our community.

Thank you for your commitment and support. I look forward to new partnerships, continued meaningful impact, and all the great things that year two has to offer.

Sincerely,

Tiffany McGahee, LCSW

Executive Director & Founder

Humble Treasures, Inc.

Treasure Market: Just Us Girls

We had the opportunity to serve the girls at Just Us Girls which is a nonprofit organization that provides group mentorship programs that cater to young ladies in 6th-12 grade who live in the South Fulton area. We hosted an Spring Attire event to outfit the girls for their upcoming end of year brunch.

We were able to outfit 23 girls with over 100 articles of clothing and accessories. We can't tell you how excited they were to participate. All the smiles, squeals, and overall giddiness was definitely a giveaway.

We also had to special treats for this Treasure Market event. Jessica Harris of Beauti-Framed provided a make-up tutorial and mini-makeover session with each young lady. Additionally, Two Dough Girls donated some of their delicious doughnuts to make our event extra sweet.

This was definitely a great group to work with & very grateful. We look forward to working with them again in the fall.

Do you know of an organization who could benefit from our pop-up boutique style shopping experience?  Please contact us to get started.

Intentional Clothing Donations

We came across an article written by Rebeca Magee, entitled "How to donate the right way"    It really hit the nail on the head about being intentional and making considerations prior to to donating to any organizations. It's take a little more effort, but don't don't be guilty of the "donation hit-and run." Lol. We pride ourselves in providing a positive experience for those we serve and really focus on giving clothing items of quality to those whom are under-resourced, because they deserve our best!

Please remember we are an organization with a limited capacity for storage space, and we rely heavily on the support of volunteers to help sort donations in preparation for Treasure Market pop-up events. Therefore we ask that the items donated be received in the following condition:

  • New or gently-used
  • In-season
  • Current style & something you'd want to wear
  • Clean

Please make sure to review our list of current needs list when considering making a donation to us. Also, Mondays are our typical clothing donation porch pick-up day. Please review of calendar for upcoming dates and email us at info@humbletreasures.org to get on the schedule.

Have some great tips to share about donating clothing? Please share.

Treasure of the Month: April

This month we recieved a referral for Treasure of the Month via one of our Community Partner contacts. Ms. TK reached out to us about a young lady she was working with who is a single mother, living in a transitional shelter with little support or financial resources. Ms. TK informed us that Vakerria just got her very first job, after several months of searching. However, she did not have the appropriate uniform required to start work, and didn't know where she would  Ms. TK told her " I know the perfect organization that can help you."

mrstk&tiffany

We had the opportunity to donate 2 sets of a work uniforms to Vakerria as she starts her new job. Now she will be able to work in proper attire and earn a living to support herself & her son Taylor. We were so happy to be able to help!

Treasure Market at Love Beyond Walls

Clothing is a very basic need, but is often difficult to access for those who need it most.  In February we set-up and began operating our on-site Treasure Market at Love Beyond Walls, one of our partner organizations. LBW provides a wealth of services to families in the College Park community such as; groceries, hygiene kits, mobile-makeovers, etc. Through this partnership we are easily able to plug-in and serve people "Humble Treasures Style"; which includes providing a dignified shopping experience completely free of charge.

treasuremarketlbw

So far we've served 102 individuals and resourced them with over 616 articles of clothing & shoes.

We are very excited to continue meeting this very basic need of the community and serve alongside great leaders in Atlanta.

Want to help? You can donate clothing & shoes to ensure our market is stocked. Or you can volunteer your time & come serve with us at the LBW Treasure Market email us info@humbletreasures.org to find out more information.

The Treasure Market couldn't have come at a better time as the Mothers were in desperate need of appropriate maternity clothing.

Ms. Kristi Ali( Program Coordinator) said Most people forget that the mother's need clothing too." Ms. Tekeisha Shields( Family Support Worker) said "This is such a cool and much needed resource for our clients!"

Kris found a much needed baby bag and several outfits for school.

How we turned a vintage camper into a resource on wheels

We bought this 1969 Coachmen Middy Camper in late August of last year. Over the last five months we have completely transformed this 9ft travel trailer into the Humble Treasures mobile store.

20151231_103703.jpg

The camper was clearly in rough shape when we got it. With it being over 40 years old, it had seen better days. The camper required a complete overhaul which included: gutting the entire interior, removing the interior walls, insulation, new sub-floor & flooring, full electrical wiring, extensive body work, and exterior paint, new roof, new door, and much more.

You saw the before, now here is the after.

Dun, dun, dunnnnn......

4.jpg

Below are a few before/after pictures, just before we put the finishing touches on it for the big reveal.

backsidesbys.jpg

We ran into quite a few delays and major bumps along the way, but that's just part of the story! The mobile store was a definitely a labor of love and it's was all worth it, because we can serve people at community partner locations and eliminate the barriers of transportation and accessibility for those in need.

This was probably one of the most challenging projects ever!  However, we didn't give up on it; even though....there were times it ran through our minds. Ultimately, we saw the potential, and with lots of hard work, patience, persistence, and the help of some awesome people we were able to completely transform it into our mobile Treasure Market.

We revealed the camper during our Humble Treasures Launch Party a few weeks ago where guests had the chance to tour the camper and learn about the process from start to finish.

We are grateful to the friends that helped us complete this project. We could not have done it without you!

We are so excited about taking the mobile store out & about in Atlanta, and serving larger numbers of people in need in our community. Be sure to follow us to find out where we're going to serve, and how you can help out.

Launch Party Success

Our Launch Party was a huge success! Thanks to our generous supporters we raised a total of $1,200!

We had the opportunity to eat, drink, network, and share our story & vision for 2016; which made for a great evening. Some awesome connections were made and ideas were shared with those interested in supporting our mission.

Collage 1.png

We also revealed, something we've been keeping secret for the past five months; which is our Mobile Store. It's finally done...and we wanted to celebrate it's completion on our special night. We will be taking this camper around to various community partner organizations in the metro-area to serve their clients via the Treasure Market. This will give people an opportunity to hop on and 'shop' for their needed clothing items, completely free!

You can learn more about how we converted a 1969 vintage camper into our mobile store HERE

Humble Treasures received a $5 donation for every registered race participant; which will help us continue to resource those in need of clothing in Atlanta.

Tis the Season to Give

Last Thursday we were contacted by Ms. Johnson, Atlanta Public School Social Worker regarding a family in need. She informed us that the Alexander's (a family of 8) needed a Christmas Tree for the upcoming holiday. She further explained that 2015 has been a difficult year for the family due to personal, health, and financial challenges. Therefore, money to purchase a tree and all the decorations were not going to be possible.

Humble Treasures put out a call to action and our supporters responded!  We were able to give an artificial christmas tree, ornaments, lights, a tree skirt, and holiday table setting basket. It was definitely a day of true community giving in action!

Thank you Noel and Diana for donating to Humble Treasures and making this Christmas holiday a special one for the Alexander family. Also, stay tuned to see how Humble Treasures helps the Alexander family with some of their long term needs in the coming weeks.

On Sunday Dec.  20th we had the opportunity to help Arlicia Scretchen, a fellow non-profit leader. Arlicia is the Executive Director and Founder of Passion Outreach International in Decatur, GA. Passion Outreach hosted their annual Connect Angel Tree program where their goal was to serve over 100 families in need of toys & gifts for Christmas.

connectangeltree

It was great to be able to meet our sponsored Angel Family. The best part was making the connection, hearing their story, and getting big thank you hugs from the kiddos. We also helped distribute the gifts to other participating Angel Tree families and spent time getting to know others in the community.

HT Gives: Jesse's House

A few weeks ago, Humble Treasures had the opportunity to serve Jesse's House via our HT Gives program. "HT Gives" focuses on providing a donation package to local non-profit organizations to help fulfill specific large scale needs. We believe in True Community Giving, and love helping other organizations by leveraging our resources to help them continue to do their great work in OUR community.

Jesse's House was in need of fall/winter clothing for the girls as the temperatures are beginning to drop. So, we gathered items from our inventory & donors to put together a clothing package to keep the girls warm.

These two baskets were filled with sweaters, jeans, long sleeve shirts, and socks to keep the teens at Jesse's House warm during the season.

These two baskets were filled with sweaters, jeans, long sleeve shirts, and socks to keep the teens at Jesse's House warm during the season.

Jesse's House is an emergency care facility which serves girls and teens in crisis. The home is located in Cumming, GA in Forsyth County, but serves counties throughout North Georgia. The home provides shelter, education, counseling, and other supportive services in order for each child to thrive and increase their opportunities for future success.

To find out more information about the great work Jesse's House is doing for adolescent girls in the community, please visit: Jesse's House

Our work with Jesse's House won't stop here! Humble Treasures has plans to host one of many  Treasure Market events with the girls in 2016. We are so excited to give the girls a chance to "shop" and pick out a nice outfit & some accessories. The outfit won't be the most valuable part of the experience. It's more about spending individual time with each girl, being present, increasing self-esteem, and having fun!

If your organization is interested in participating in an HT Gives or Treasure Market please email us at info@humbletreasures.org.

Meet Our New Board Members

htnewboardmembers

We are so excited to announce that both Ellyn Dupuis and Carmen Ospino have joined the Humble Treasures Board of Directors. We couldn't ask for two better people to join our community.

You can learn more about each of them here

We are thrilled to have Ellyn and Carmen with us! We look forward to working together in the coming year to move Humble Treasures forward in our vision. Please be sure to introduce yourself at our upcoming events!

Treasure of the Month: Meet Bianca!

One of the ways Humble Treasures helps those in need is through Treasure Matching; where community partners reach out to us about specific individuals who need a little extra help. After a referral we share the story with our donors and work together to best serve our Treasure of the Month.

Treasure Matching at work: Bianca (left) receiving the flannel sheet set donated by our supporter, Anna(Right).

Treasure Matching at work: Bianca (left) receiving the flannel sheet set donated by our supporter, Anna(Right).

Well, this month we received a referral from Belinda Johnson, a School Social Worker with Atlanta Public Schools. Ms. Johnson told us about Bianca, a single mother of five children who experienced a house fire on October 28th. Thankfully, all six of them got out of the home safely, but they lost almost everything.

treasureofmonthbiancaalone

Bianca and her children( newborn, 1, 3, 6, and 10) had no choice, but to move in with a friend temporarily. Although, thankful for the roof over their head, space is limited, and so are places to sleep. As a result, she and her children have been sleeping on the floor. In an effort to help, Humble Treasures provided Bianca & her little ones with a queen air mattress & pump, flannel bedding, linens, clothing, shoes, and more.

biancaandtiffanyhtreasures

Humble Treasures couldn't have been connected with Bianca at a better time, and we were thrilled to have the opportunity to gift her the items she and her family needed at this time. Moving forward, Humble Treasures will continue to follow up and provide supportive services to Bianca and her family over the next several months.

Want to offer more help?

Although, Bianca is grateful for the items she received she is still in need of a warm winter coat(S/M), sweaters(S/M), a soft baby carrier, and plastic storage bins. If you can you help by donating these items please email us at info@humbletreasures.org or donate here and we will purchase the items for Bianca.

Thank you in advance, and know that your gift will help Bianca & her littles after such a devastating event.
